Rhaenyra's own moral collapse. Ordering the assault on Tumbleton knowing it would level the city, then coldly having Helaena mistreated during her hunger strike, then abruptly banishing Mysaria — this finale draws a hard line under just how far Rhaenyra has drifted from the reluctant, principled claimant of Season 1. The show is clearly building her as a tragic figure rather than a straightforward villain, but "tragic" still means the people around her keep paying the price for choices that increasingly look like they're about vengeance and control as much as they're about the throne itself. If Season 4 wants us to keep rooting for her, it has to reckon with what she's already done.

Helaena's suicide. After weeks of a hunger strike and being force-fed by the Queen's own men, Helaena learns her son will be a permanent hostage and throws herself from a tower — a fate the show had already quietly foreshadowed in her own embroidery. Her last words to Rhaenyra, "All the things you care about are ugly. This place is ugly. You, yourself, are ugly," land as the finale's most devastating verdict on the entire war, delivered by the one character who never wanted any part of it in the first place.
The reveal that Aegon II is alive — and still has Sunfyre. Just when Rhaenyra's position looks strongest, word arrives that the king everyone assumed was finished actually survived and kept his dragon intact.
