Felina — Walter White gets exactly what he wants

Breaking Bad's finale gave Walter White almost everything he wanted: he freed Jesse, secured money for his family, took down Jack's crew with a homemade machine gun rig, and even got a quiet, almost peaceful death on his own terms surrounded by the meth equipment that defined his transformation. Critics and fans largely praised it as a tightly plotted, satisfying send-off that answered every dangling thread — Lydia, the ricin, the M60 in the trunk — without cheating the audience. Some argue it was too neat, too much of a victory lap for a man who caused so much damage. But as pure closure, "Felina" is often held up as the gold standard for how to end a prestige drama.

The cut to black heard round the world

The Sopranos ended mid-scene: Tony sits in a diner booth with his family, Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" plays on the jukebox, a suspicious man walks toward the bathroom, and then — nothing. The screen cuts to black for several seconds before the credits roll in silence. No gunshot, no confirmation, no resolution. David Chase has spent years dodging a straight answer about what it means, letting fans argue endlessly over whether Tony died right there or the ambiguity was the entire point — that his paranoid, always-watching life simply continues, or simply ends, without the show telling you which. It remains one of the most polarizing and analyzed endings in television history.

Bran the Broken takes the throne

Game of Thrones spent eight seasons building toward a war for the Iron Throne, and then handed the crown to Bran Stark — a character who had barely spoken in two seasons and whose main trait was quietly watching things happen as the Three-Eyed Raven. Along the way Daenerys, long positioned as a hero, snapped and burned King's Landing to the ground, and Jon Snow killed her before being exiled back to the Night's Watch. Longtime fans felt years of character work were undone in a handful of rushed episodes, and the backlash was so intense it spawned a petition with over a million signatures demanding a remake. It's frequently cited as the clearest example of a beloved show sabotaging its own ending.

The twist nobody wanted

How I Met Your Mother spent nine seasons building the mother, Tracy, into the emotional payoff of the entire show — a nearly-perfect love story finally introduced in the final season. Then the finale revealed Tracy had died years earlier, and Ted's whole story was actually him explaining to his kids why he still had feelings for Robin, ending with him showing up at her door with the blue French horn one more time. Fans felt whiplash: the show spent a full season selling the mother as the point of the story, only to sideline her and revert to a will-they-won't-they the show seemed to have already resolved. Some saw it as a bold, bittersweet statement on love and loss; many felt it betrayed nine years of buildup.
