Calculus (Newton and Leibniz, 1660s-80s). The math of change itself - it underlies nearly all of physics, engineering, and economics. The two inventors independently discovered it, then spent decades in a bitter priority feud that estranged them for life.
Godel's Incompleteness Theorems (1931). Proved that in any math system powerful enough to describe arithmetic, there will always be true statements that system can never prove true using its own rules - killing the 2,000-year dream of a fully provable mathematics.
