The marine chronometer — John Harrison's 18th-century invention finally let sailors measure longitude accurately at sea, solving a problem that had cost thousands of lives and made modern navigation possible.

The tourbillon — Abraham-Louis Breguet's 1801 invention rotates the escapement to cancel out the effect of gravity on accuracy, and remains one of the most prized complications in high horology today.

The quartz movement — Japanese quartz watches in the 1970s were so cheap and accurate they nearly wiped out traditional Swiss mechanical watchmaking entirely, an event the industry still calls the Quartz Crisis.

The automatic (self-winding) movement — Rolex's 1931 Perpetual rotor used the wearer's own wrist motion to wind the mainspring, freeing wristwatches from daily manual winding for good.

The first wristwatch — Cartier built the Santos in 1904 for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont so he could check the time mid-flight without letting go of the controls, kicking off the shift away from pocket watches.

The balance spring — Christiaan Huygens' 1675 hairspring gave watches a reliable timekeeping heartbeat for the first time, turning portable timepieces from rough estimates into genuinely accurate instruments.
