Iconic movie lines everyone misquotes — which one surprised you most?

"No, I am your father" — not "Luke, I am your father"

During their lightsaber duel above Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Darth Vader tells Luke Skywalker that Obi-Wan never revealed the truth about his father. When Luke insists Vader killed him, Vader replies simply: "No. I am your father." Luke's name is never spoken in the line at all. The popular version, "Luke, I am your father," has been repeated in parodies, references, and casual conversation so often that most people are shocked to learn it's not actually in the film — one of the most famous mismatches between pop culture memory and the real script in movie history.

"Play it, Sam" — not "Play it again, Sam"

In Casablanca (1942), Ilsa Lund recognizes pianist Sam at Rick's café and asks him to play their song, saying "Play it once, Sam, for old times' sake... play it, Sam." Nowhere in the film does anyone say "Play it again, Sam." That exact phrase actually comes from the title of an unrelated 1972 Woody Allen play and film that riffed on Casablanca's reputation, and it stuck so hard in public memory that people now misattribute it back to the original movie it was parodying. It's one of the oldest and most persistent misquotes in film history.

"If you build it, he will come" — not "they will come"

In Field of Dreams (1989), Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella hears a mysterious voice whisper while he's walking through his cornfield, urging him to build a baseball diamond. The actual line is "If you build it, he will come" — singular, referring to a specific person, which turns out to be a quietly devastating setup for the film's ending involving Ray's father. The commonly repeated version, "they will come," swaps the singular for a plural and strips out the emotional specificity that makes the real line, and the movie's final scene, land so much harder.

"Houston, we've had a problem" — not "we have a problem"

After an oxygen tank explodes aboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft in the 1995 film, astronaut Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks) calmly radios Mission Control with the line "Okay, Houston, we've had a problem here" — past tense, not present. The film deliberately preserved the real 1970 radio transcript, where astronaut Jack Swigert first reported the issue and Lovell repeated it using that same past-tense phrasing. Pop culture flattened it into "Houston, we have a problem" over the decades, a version that's technically wrong in both the movie and the actual historical event it's based on.
