Freddie Mercury commands 72,000 people like one instrument

At Live Aid in July 1985, Queen played a 20-minute set at Wembley Stadium that's still cited as the greatest live performance in rock history. Freddie Mercury turned the entire stadium into a single call-and-response instrument during the "Ay-oh" vocal exchange, and led a mass singalong on "Radio Ga Ga" that became one of the most replayed clips in music history. Surveys of musicians and critics have repeatedly ranked this set above every other festival or arena performance ever filmed, for the sheer scale of connection Mercury built with a crowd that size in under half an hour.

The national anthem reimagined as a showstopper

Whitney Houston sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Super Bowl XXV in January 1991, ten days after the Gulf War began, and turned a song most performers play safe into a full-blown gospel-soul arrangement backed by a live orchestra. The recording was released as a single, hit the Billboard charts, and was re-released a decade later after 9/11, becoming the only national anthem performance ever to chart twice. It's frequently named the best rendition of the anthem ever sung, and NFL broadcasts still cue it up as the standard every anthem singer gets measured against.

A career resurrected in three minutes, drenched in sweat

By December 1968 Elvis Presley hadn't performed live in seven years and was written off as a relic of the fifties. Then came the NBC special later nicknamed the '68 Comeback Special, where he closed with "If I Can Dream," recorded live in one raw, unrehearsed take while sweating through a white suit, fist clenched around the microphone like he was fighting for his career in real time. That single performance is widely credited with reviving Elvis's entire career and is still held up by critics as one of the most emotionally charged vocal performances ever captured on television.

A guitar solo so good it left Tom Petty grinning in disbelief

At the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction of George Harrison, an all-star lineup including Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne performed "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" — and then Prince walked out for the final two minutes and delivered a solo that hijacked the entire song. He soloed with his eyes closed, fell backward into the crowd's arms mid-note, and closed by flinging his guitar into the air and walking offstage without watching it land. Nobody has ever confirmed who caught it. Rolling Stone and countless musicians have called it one of the greatest guitar solos ever filmed.
