"Do you believe in miracles?"

On February 22, 1980, a roster of American college kids — amateurs facing a Soviet team that had just demolished an NHL all-star squad 6-0 — somehow beat the four-time defending gold medalist USSR 4-3 in the Winter Olympics semifinal at Lake Placid. It wasn't even for gold; the US still had to beat Finland two days later, which they did. But the semifinal is the moment that endures: Al Michaels' "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!" call, the bench emptying onto the ice, a Cold War-era crowd losing its mind. It's still the standard for "nobody saw this coming."

One vault, one shattered ankle, one gold medal

At the 1996 Atlanta Games, the US women's gymnastics team needed a strong final vault from Kerri Strug to clinch team gold over Russia. Her first attempt went wrong and she badly sprained her ankle on landing. Coach Bela Karolyi told her the team needed one more good vault, so Strug sprinted down the runway again, landed her second vault on the same injured ankle, saluted the judges, then collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the podium. The Americans won the first-ever women's team gymnastics gold, and Strug's vault became one of the defining images of Olympic sacrifice.

The dairy farmer who beat the unbeatable man

Alexander Karelin was considered maybe the greatest wrestler who ever lived — a Russian Greco-Roman heavyweight who hadn't lost an international match in 13 years and had barely given up a point in years of competition. At the 2000 Sydney Games, American Rulon Gardner, a dairy farmer from Wyoming given almost no chance, faced him in the final. Karelin briefly lost his grip during a clinch, handing Gardner a single point — and it held up as the final score, 1-0. Gardner celebrated with a cartwheel on the mat, and Karelin, visibly stunned, never wrestled competitively again.

A father, a torn hamstring, and a finish line

In his 400m semifinal at the 1992 Barcelona Games, British sprinter Derek Redmond tore his hamstring partway through the race and crumpled to the track in pain. Instead of stopping, he got back up and started hobbling toward the finish line alone. His father, Jim, broke past security and ran onto the track to reach him, wrapping an arm around his son so Derek could finish the race walking, in tears, to a standing ovation. Redmond never got his medal that day, but the image of him crossing the line with his father's support became one of the most replayed moments in Olympic history.
