Freddie Mercury & Queen — Live Aid 1985 ("Radio Ga Ga"): In front of roughly 72,000 people at Wembley and nearly two billion watching worldwide, Freddie Mercury commanded Live Aid's stadium crowd into a single perfectly synchronized clap-along during "Radio Ga Ga." It's widely regarded as the greatest live rock performance ever filmed — a masterclass in controlling an audience without saying a word. Whitney Houston — National Anthem, Super Bowl XXV (1991): Days after the U.S. entered the Gulf War, Whitney Houston stepped onto the field in Tampa and delivered a "Star-Spangled Banner" so powerful it was released as a single and hit the Billboard charts twice. Beyoncé — Coachella 2018 ("Homecoming"): Beyoncé became the first Black woman to headline Coachella, and she used the slot to stage a two-hour, HBCU-marching-band-fueled celebration of Black culture, sorority step traditions, and her own catalog reimagined as a full-blown halftime spectacle. Returning less than a year after giving birth to twins, the performance was praised as one of the most ambitious and meticulously choreographed festival sets ever staged. Prince — "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction (2004): During a tribute to newly inducted George Harrison, Prince stepped out for the guitar solo and delivered one of the most legendary six-string performances ever captured, closing with a jaw-dropping backward fall into the crowd's arms without missing a note. Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Steve Winwood shared the stage, but Prince stole the moment so completely that the clip has been rewatched millions of times since. It's frequently ranked among the greatest guitar solos in music history — TV or otherwise.

Luciano Pavarotti — "Nessun Dorma": Pavarotti's rendition of Puccini's "Nessun Dorma" turned an obscure operatic aria into a global phenomenon, famous for the thunderous, sustained high B that closes the piece. His live performances of it — delivered with seemingly effortless power — introduced opera to audiences who'd never otherwise have watched a tenor perform. It became so iconic it was adopted as the anthem of the 1990 World Cup and remains the single most recognized operatic performance in modern history.

Johnny Cash — "Hurt": Recorded near the end of his life, Cash's stripped-down cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" is a devastating meditation on mortality, regret, and love, filmed with his health visibly failing and wife June Carter Cash looking on. Trent Reznor himself called it definitive, saying the song "isn't mine anymore." It's widely considered one of the most emotionally raw performances ever committed to film, closing out Cash's career on an unforgettable note.

The Beatles — Rooftop Concert (1969): On a freezing January afternoon, the Beatles climbed to the roof of Apple Corps' London headquarters and played an unannounced 42-minute set, stopping traffic below and drawing bemused police who eventually shut it down. It was the band's final live performance together, captured for what became the "Let It Be" (and later "Get Back") documentary. The spontaneity and finality of it have made it one of the most mythologized moments in rock history.
