International aid to Afghanistan delivered significant positive progress between 2001 and 2021, expanding public healthcare, primary education, and basic infrastructure as highlighted by the World Bank. However, assessments by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) note that the influx created extreme economic dependency, suffered from corruption, and left the country vulnerable to economic shock when donor funding abruptly dropped following the 2021 regime change. Ultimately, while international aid provided vital short-term relief and measurable social gains, it fell short of establishing a self-sustaining economy or long-term institutional stability.
