The New7Wonders campaign asked over 100 million people worldwide to vote on humanity's greatest surviving landmarks, and these three made the final cut for very different reasons: one is a 2,000-plus-year-old feat of military engineering stretching thousands of miles, one is a mountaintop citadel so remote it stayed hidden from the outside world for centuries, and one is a Roman engineering marvel that could seat 50,000 spectators nearly 2,000 years ago. If you could only book one flight, which piece of human history would you want to stand in front of?

The Great Wall of China — a series of fortifications stretching over 13,000 miles across northern China, built and rebuilt over more than 2,000 years starting around the 7th century BC to defend against nomadic invasions. Contrary to popular myth, it isn't actually visible to the naked eye from space, but its scale on the ground is staggering — it winds across mountains, deserts, and grasslands.

Machu Picchu — a 15th-century Inca citadel perched at 7,970 feet in the Peruvian Andes, built without mortar using precisely cut stone blocks that fit together so tightly a knife blade can't slip between them. It was abandoned during the Spanish conquest and stayed unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought international attention to it in 1911.

The Colosseum — completed in AD 80 in the heart of Rome, this elliptical amphitheatre could hold an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators for gladiator contests, mock naval battles, and public spectacles. It's the largest amphitheatre ever built and still stands as one of the most recognizable feats of Roman engineering nearly 2,000 years later.
