The Beatles (1960–1970): John, Paul, George, and Ringo released twelve studio albums in eight years and fundamentally rewrote the rules of pop music along the way. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) pioneered the concept album and pushed studio experimentation, tape loops, orchestral overdubs, backwards recording, into the mainstream, while earlier records like Rubber Soul and Revolver introduced sitar, string arrangements, and modal harmony to Top 40 radio. Their February 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show drew an estimated 73 million viewers, igniting the British Invasion and reshaping American youth culture overnight. As songwriters, Lennon-McCartney's catalog produced 20 U.S. number-one singles, more than any other songwriting duo in chart history. By the time they split in 1970, they had sold an estimated 600 million-plus records worldwide and left almost no corner of popular music, from psychedelia to heavy metal to hip-hop sampling, untouched by their influence.

Michael Jackson (1958–2009): Crowned the King of Pop, Jackson transformed the music video from a promotional afterthought into a cinematic art form. His 1982 album Thriller remains the best-selling album of all time, with estimates topping 70 million copies worldwide, and its title track's 14-minute short film, directed by John Landis, cost $500,000 and single-handedly proved MTV could build must-see event television around a Black artist, breaking the network's early, unofficial color line. Jackson debuted the moonwalk during a 1983 performance of "Billie Jean" watched by an estimated 47 million viewers, instantly becoming one of the most imitated dance moves in history. He fused funk, R&B, rock, and pop into a sound that dominated radio for two decades, while his mastery of vocal percussion, the sharp intakes of breath, grunts, and hiccups laced through his songs, became a genre unto itself, endlessly sampled and imitated by artists across hip-hop and pop.

Bob Dylan (b. 1941): Dylan turned popular songwriting into literature. Albums like The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963) and Highway 61 Revisited (1965) gave the civil rights and anti-war movements their anthems, "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" became generational rallying cries, while "Like a Rolling Stone," clocking in at over six minutes, shattered the unwritten rule that a pop single had to stay under three. His decision to plug in an electric guitar at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival provoked boos from folk purists but effectively invented folk-rock and proved rock lyrics could carry the weight of poetry. In 2016, Dylan became the first musician awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, honored "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition." Across more than six decades and 39 studio albums, his lyrical influence runs through everyone from the Beatles and Bruce Springsteen to modern hip-hop wordsmiths.

Elvis Presley (1935–1977): Presley didn't invent rock and roll, but he was the artist who carried it out of Black R&B clubs and Southern radio into mainstream white America, at a time when the country's airwaves and record charts were still rigidly segregated. His 1956 single "Heartbreak Hotel" hit number one, and his television appearances, including the famously censored waist-up-only shots on The Ed Sullivan Show, made him a lightning rod for a generation's anxieties about race, sexuality, and youth culture. He is the best-selling solo artist in music history, with estimated sales exceeding 500 million records worldwide, and his catalog spans rock, gospel, country, and pop, reflecting the genre-blending sound that would define popular music for decades after him. His 1968 "Comeback Special" is still cited as one of the greatest live television performances ever staged, reviving a career many had already written off and proving the power of a single broadcast to reset an artist's cultural standing.

Queen, with Freddie Mercury (1970–1991): Few bands treated the studio itself as an instrument the way Queen did. "Bohemian Rhapsody" (1975), a six-minute mini-opera stitching together ballad, guitar solo, and mock-operatic chorus with no repeating refrain, defied every rule of radio-friendly songwriting and became a global number-one hit anyway, later voted the UK's favorite single of all time in multiple polls. Freddie Mercury's four-octave vocal range and command of Wembley Stadium's 72,000-strong crowd during Queen's 1985 Live Aid set, widely voted the greatest live performance in rock history, showed a band capable of unifying an audience through a single "ay-oh" call-and-response. Guitarist Brian May, who holds a PhD in astrophysics, built his iconic "Red Special" guitar by hand with his father, and the band's layered vocal harmonies and multi-tracked guitar orchestras influenced everything from glam rock to the operatic ambitions of later stadium acts. Queen sold over 300 million records worldwide, and Mercury's 1991 death from AIDS-related complications made him one of the most mourned cultural figures of his era.

Beyoncé (b. 1981): Beyoncé redefined what a 21st-century album release could be. Her self-titled 2013 record dropped with zero promotion at midnight, arriving as a complete "visual album" with a music video for every one of its 14 tracks, upending the traditional single-and-rollout model and forcing the entire industry to rethink release strategy. Lemonade (2016) fused R&B, country, rock, and trap into a single hour-long HBO film, while Renaissance (2022) traced dance music's history back through Black and queer ballroom and disco culture, earning her the record for most Grammy wins by any artist, 32 and counting. Her 2018 Coachella headline set, later released as the film Homecoming, drew on the marching-band and step-show traditions of historically Black colleges and universities and is widely credited with reshaping how festival headline performances are staged. Beyoncé's influence extends beyond music into choreography, visual album formats, and surprise-release marketing, a playbook artists across pop have since adopted wholesale.
