What's the best budget travel destination right now?

With flights and hotels getting pricier everywhere, 'budget travel' increasingly means picking the right country, not just the right hotel deal. Some places still let you eat well, sleep comfortably, and see everything on $30-40 a day, while others that used to be cheap (looking at you, Southeast Asia post-2020) have quietly gotten a lot more expensive. So where's actually still worth it in 2026 — which destination gives you the best experience per dollar, and which 'budget' spots are now overrated?

Vietnam - still one of the best value-for-money trips on earth: $15-20/night gets you a solid hotel, street food meals cost $1-2, and you get everything from Ha Long Bay to Hoi An's old town to Saigon's chaos in one country. Some say tourist prices in Hanoi and Da Nang have crept up, but it's still far cheaper than most of Southeast Asia.

Portugal - the cheapest way into Western Europe without sacrificing quality: Lisbon and Porto are gorgeous, the food and wine are excellent, and prices are noticeably lower than Spain, France, or Italy. Downside is it's not exactly a secret anymore, so peak-season Lisbon and Porto have gotten pricier and busier than a few years ago.

Mexico City - huge value for US/Canada travelers especially: cheap flights, world-class food for a few dollars a meal, incredible museums and neighborhoods, and a favorable exchange rate. Some argue Roma/Condesa have gentrified hard due to digital nomads, pushing prices up in those specific neighborhoods, but the city overall is still a bargain.

Thailand - the classic backpacker route for a reason: islands, jungle, temples, and legendary street food, all still doable on $30-40/day outside of Bangkok and the party islands. The counterargument is that Thailand isn't the screaming deal it was a decade ago - Bali and parts of Vietnam now undercut it on price for a similar vibe.

Georgia (the country, not the US state) - visa-free entry for many nationalities, remarkably cheap wine and food, dramatic Caucasus mountain scenery, and a currency that stretches a long way. It's less discovered than Southeast Asia or Latin America, though that also means less tourist infrastructure and more logistics to figure out yourself.
