William Shakespeare coined or popularized more than 1,700 words still used in everyday English, from “bedroom” to “assassination,” and his plays have never gone out of print or out of performance in over 400 years. Yet it is often a single line — quoted at funerals, weddings, graduations, and everywhere in between — that carries an entire play’s soul. Hamlet — “To be, or not to be, that is the question.” Delivered as Hamlet weighs the unbearable weight of existence, this single line has been called the most quoted sentence in the English language. It is so embedded in culture that even people who have never seen the play can finish it from memory.

Macbeth — “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day.” Macbeth speaks these words on learning of Lady Macbeth’s death, reducing life itself to “a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” The speech is widely regarded as one of the bleakest, most devastating passages Shakespeare ever wrote.

Romeo and Juliet — “But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.” Spoken by Romeo beneath Juliet’s window, this line launched the most famous love scene in Western literature — even though the word “balcony” never actually appears anywhere in Shakespeare’s original text.

Julius Caesar — “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears.” Mark Antony opens his funeral oration for the murdered Caesar with this line, then spends the entire speech turning the Roman crowd against the conspirators through sheer rhetorical skill, without ever directly accusing them of anything.

The Merchant of Venice — “The quality of mercy is not strained; it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven.” Portia delivers this plea for compassion while disguised as a young lawyer during Shylock’s courtroom trial, in one of the earliest and most influential arguments for mercy over strict legal justice ever staged.

As You Like It — “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Jaques’s speech goes on to map a single human life onto seven ages, from “mewling and puking” infancy to a second childhood in old age — a framework so memorable it has shaped how generations have thought about the human lifespan.

Sonnet 18 — “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate.” The most famous of the roughly 130 sonnets Shakespeare addressed to a mysterious “fair youth,” it ultimately promises that as long as people can still read, the poem itself will keep its subject alive forever.

Richard III — “Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York.” Richard opens the play with a line that sounds like praise for his brother’s reign — until the very next lines reveal it as the start of Richard’s own scheming, self-aware plot to seize the throne.
